5 Warm-Up Mistakes That Are Slowing Your Progress

Skipping the right warm-up can cost you more than performance — here's what to fix.

Most people either skip warming up entirely or do the wrong kind. A proper warm-up isn't just a few arm circles — it's the difference between a great session and an injury that sidelines you for weeks.

1. Static stretching before you move

Holding a stretch for 30 seconds before your muscles are warm can actually reduce power output. Save static stretching for after your workout — before, stick to dynamic movement.

2. Jumping straight into max effort

Your first set should never be your heaviest. Ramp up gradually: a light set, a moderate set, then your working weight. Your joints and nervous system need the runway.

3. Ignoring the muscles you're about to use

A five-minute jog before leg day is fine, but it won't wake up your glutes. Match your warm-up to your workout — banded walks before squats, shoulder dislocates before pressing.

4. Rushing it

Ten minutes is the minimum for most training sessions, more if you're lifting heavy or it's cold out. It's not wasted time — it's the setup for everything that follows.

5. Skipping it on "easy" days

Recovery runs and light sessions still deserve a warm-up. Cold muscles don't know the difference between a hard set and an easy one.

Get the warm-up right and everything after it — strength, speed, and how you feel the next day — gets easier.
